Good thing L'il Sis is a toughie...

It's never a good thing to get a call from the school nurse. Especially as you're headed out the door to pick up the kids. Earlier this week, I had just such a call. Apparently, our 5 yr old had had an inauspicious meeting with a playground slide. Result: an abraded chin, bruised gums and loose front teeth. None of her teeth had been loose when I sent her to school that morning.

I picked her and her sister up from school and drove immediately to their dentist's office. She was x-rayed and examined and should be fine. In fact, her teeth already seem to have tightened up and no longer seem to be in danger of falling out of her head. But the whole time, I kept thinking 2 things: (1) this was very reminiscent of my sister with whom she shares more than a passing resemblance; and (2) these types of things always seem to happen to her and not her older sister. *sigh*

Hate those phone calls, though I'd rather get them than have something happen and no word from the nurse. Glad the teeth are ok. Baby or permanent? Maybe she was looking forward to the tooth fairy coming?

They're baby teeth and her bottom ones aren't even loose yet. She was slow to get teeth do will likely be slow to lose them. At least the natural way.

Just once, don't you wish that phone call from the school was the teacher and or principal calling up just to say, "I just wanted to let you know that your daughter had a fantastic day. She was a joy to be around. She is a great influence on her peers. She is a genius and just found the cure to cancer on her recess break. Oh, and we think she has found the answer to world peace."

Instead, it's always because she is either hurt or the teacher has a concern.

I actually said this to my youngest daughter's school principal and she told me that she once DID call a parent with nothing but nice things to say and the parent kept asking what the child had done wrong. They thought she was just trying to break it to them gently. After that, she said, she never called again but would occasionally send a short note home.

Lemon Stand, I actually did get a call like that last year. Well, sort of. My older daughter had turned in another child who had brought a knife to school and the principal called to tell me what had happened to tell me how proud they were of my daughter. But it was still a scary call!
